Mrs. Grace Dismuke Hogan

Grace Dismuke Hogan, affectionately known as "Amazing Grace", was born March 22, 1924 to the union of the late Spence and Corine Purvis of Rankin County Mississippi. Accepting Christ at an early age, Grace was a proud and active member of her church, community and the Eastern Star over the years until her health began to fail her. Seeking better life opportunities, Grace moved to Michigan early in her life where she lived, married, worked, and raised her two children, Derrick, and Maxine, while working out her soul salvation. Grace moved back to Mississippi in 1980 after raising her children to get away from the cold weather, the busyness of living in Detroit, Michigan and to be near her sister and other relatives in her hometown. Grace's nurturing spirit touched countless lives. Not only was she a devoted mom to her own children, "Amazing Grace" was dedicated to the wellbeing of children and the elderly which was evident by her serving many years as a foster mother to handicapped children and her working career at Whitfield, Pearl MS. Grace was the matriarch of the family and was held in high regard with the utmost respect by all who knew her. Grace was a warrior and the epitome of a true godly woman of strength who left behind a legacy of love to those who cherished her dearly. Grace was a resilient, dignified, independent and poised lady. She was stylish and loved to look good all the time. As a fashionista in her own way and time, Grace always completed her outfits with matching hats and complimentary jewelry before stepping out of her house. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, and gardening. Her biggest joy was putting up her Christmas lights every year which supported her enthusiasm and declaration: "I'm going to light up this house tonight!". Grace was blessed to live a very long centenarian and purpose-filled life devoted to her faith, family and service to others. Sometimes her service to others was in simply insisting you take a cold bottle of water before you left her house. With a heart of gold, she never met a stranger and welcomed everyone with open arms. Only a little more than two months before turning 102 years old on January 12, 2026 with her daughter Maxine by her bedside, our Lord called Grace from labor to reward. The "Amazing Grace" will be remembered for her infectious smile, her kind heart, and her unwavering devotion to her family, faith and friends. In this time of sorrow, we celebrate the life of a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many and left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves to cherish her memory: one son Derrick Dismuke of Oakland, California; one daughter Maxine (Terence) Brown of Detroit, Michigan; one grandson Terence Brown II of Windsor, Ontario, one niece Lucille Stapleton of Brandon, Mississippi: Special Mississippi friends who assisted in caring for her (when she let them): Claudia Jones (provided food, water and medication daily); Eileen Maxwell, Perry Coleman, Debra Coleman, and Sandra Quick; three bonus daughters that loved her dearly: Belinda Smith-Martin (Rodney) of Ashburn, Virginia, Joyce Houston and Peggy Heade both of Detroit, Michigan; and two bonus sons: James Williams and Dexter Cosper both of Detroit, Michigan, and a host of great- nieces, great- nephews, cousins and friends.
