Mrs. Verla Sanders Foote

Verla LaFrench Sanders Foote was the fourth child born to Tony and Mary Lou Sanders. She was preceded in death by two brothers; Alfred Sanders and Demothenese Sanders, and three sisters; Beatrice Lee, Celestine Rose, and Willie Ann Webb. At an early age, Verla accepted Christ and united with College Hill M.B. Church under the leadership of Rev. W.L. Jones. She is a proud graduate of Lanier High School (833). She also attended Jackson State College (now Jackson State University). Verla was joined in holy matrimony to Lee F. Foote in 1959. For sixty-four years they were a source of love, comfort, and support for each other. They were blessed with one son, William Lefelton. Verla united with Rock Hill M.B. Church and served faithfully in several capacities including; Deaconess, Sunday School member, Pastor's Aid President, Women's Mission Department, and Kitchen Manager. After forty years of service, Verla retired as a dietician from Jackson Public Schools (Murrah High School) in 1992. Other JPS employment included Brown Elementary, Powell Middle School, Rowan Middle School, and Westside. For several summers she served as Director of Food Service for Harold's Tribune Fresh Air Fund in Poughkeepsie, NY. She instructed an equipment course for the JPS Management and Cook Training programs. She also supervised an on the job training program for Hinds Jr. College students enrolled in institutional management courses. She served as secretary and treasurer of Region 4 of the MS School Food Service Association. Verla was a member of Ebony Social and Civic Club, Pokeno Social and Civic Club, and Pearlie Grove Homemakers. She was an incredible cook and took great pleasure in sharing her gift with family and friends. When you visited her home, she always made sure you were fed good and left with as much as you wanted. Leaving to cherish her life and beautiful memories is a devoted husband, Lee F. Foote; a son, William Lefelton (Sarah) Foote; two grandchildren, Joseph LeFelton Foote and Tiara Louise Foote; two sisters, Hattye Gorham of Atlanta, GA; and Perella Fisher of Raymond, MS; one brother Richard (Viola) Sanders of Blytesville, SC; two sister in laws, Evelyn Sanders of Elizabeth, NJ; and Joyce Sanders of Jackson, MS; a best friend of eighty years, Bernice Armstrong and a dedicated niece, Linda (Levon) Gray who unselfishly cared for her and made sure all her needs were met. She also leaves to cherish her memories a multitude of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
