January 19, 1951 - November 13, 2021
On November 13, 2021, our beloved father, Joseph P. Brown, Sr., left his earthly home for his heavenly home. His daughter, Jennifer, was at his bedside when he transitioned. Joseph, better known as Joe, was born on January 19, 1951, to J. P. Brown and Joella Hobson. The eldest of 6 brothers, Joe lived with his grandmother, Mattie Bennett, for a great deal of his upbringing. As a child, Joe attended Holy Ghost Catholic Church and later New Hope Missionary Baptist Church where he was baptized. Joe received his early education at Mary C. Jones in Hinds County. He graduated in 1969 from Lanier Junior-Senior High School. While a student at Lanier, he played trombone in the marching band and was named Most Handsome his senior year. Joe attended the University of Washington – Seattle. While there, he pledged and became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Upon his return to Mississippi, he enrolled in a respiratory therapy technician program and received his certification in 1973. He began his career in the field of respiratory care at University Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Nine years later, Joe earned his respiratory therapist license. After leaving UMC, Joe began working at VA Medical Center in Jackson, MS. He retired from the VA after 25+ years of service, having served as a supervisor. Thereafter, Joe continued to care for others as a respiratory therapist at St. Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson, MS. While at UMC, Joe met and later married Linda Jean Hardy. From this union three beautiful children were born: Joseph (Jojo), Jennifer (Jenny) and Mattie (Mimi). Joe was blessed again with another gorgeous daughter, Sharon T. Reel. Joe’s hobbies included playing softball, fishing, bowling, attending JSU games and live music events and spending time with family. He also enjoyed cheering at his grandson’s (Chris), great nephews’ (Galyn and Caleb) and great niece’s (Tyler) sporting events. Joe’s greatest passion was taking pictures of family and friends. After relocating to Bossier City, Louisiana, Joe took pleasure in walking around the neighborhood, watching B-52s fly overhead, posting on Facebook and living a life of leisure. Preceding Joe in death were: his wife, Linda Hardy Brown; his daughter, Mattie Melinda Brown; his mother, Joella H. Robinson; his father, J. P. Brown; his grandmother, Mattie Bennett; and his brothers, Mario Brown, Bruce Brown, Leroy Brown and Tony Brown. Joe leaves to cherish his memories: son, Joseph P. Brown, Jr. of Pearl, MS; daughter, Jennifer Brown Harley of Bossier City, LA; daughter, Sharon Reel (Philip) of Richland, MS; granddaughter, Ayla Tolbert; grandson, Christopher Reel; brother, Jerome Brown (Lenora) of Jackson, MS; sisters-in-law: Denise Brown of Petal, MS, Jeanette Brown of Jackson, MS, Deloris Gray of Memphis, TN, and Charlene Hardy of Pelahatchie, MS; brother-in-law, Frank Hardy, Jr. (Gene) of Jackson, MS and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
