August 23, 1952 - August 27, 2019
Today, we celebrate the Homegoing of Our Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Nephew, Uncle and Friend to many. He was a kind and strong man in his heart and his beliefs. He cherished life and exemplified love, patience, gentleness and peace in all of his endeavors by how he treated his fellowman. Brother Sylvester Houston, Sr. entered this world on the 23rd day of August to Mr. Sylvester and Mrs. Ida Mae. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Fannie and two brothers, Leon and James. Deacon Houston transitioned on Tuesday, August 28, 2019 from his earthly vessel. He retired after being plucked from a beautiful bouquet of flowers to begin his heavenly work in the Kingdom of God. Brother Houston was employed by Marquette Cement Manufacturing Company and B. F. 1./Allied Waste Management and retired in 2014 and became a seasonal employee. Deacon Houston has a Master's Degree in his hobby of collecting scrap metal and copper wire that he burned him self. His second trade consisted of selling skins to whoever had money. To get a free bag from him, you had to get them from his vehicle without his knowing or get a bag on credit. Brother Houston sometimes went through the different neighborhoods blowing his truck horn and hollering, "Hey Cuz, got these skins, how many bags you want." He loved to use the phrases, "What's aliening you Vee Vee; You chewing fat and fat mouthing; Hey good evening, how you doing?, God Bless You and what you got for me? Deacon Houston for many years served faithfully in the church. He loved Greater New Friendship Baptist Church. He united with the Church under the leadership of Pastor Robert Lee Odom and became a Deacon under the leadership of Pastor Billy R. Womack. His positions as a servant included the Usher Board, the Male Choir, a Vacation Bible School helper, Assistant Sunday School Teacher and the Benevolent Chairman. On Tuesday's he loved to visit the sick and shut-in no matter where, with his three Buddies. They called themselves, "The Brotherhood Prayer Warriors." He also loved to visit and deliver apple juice, hug drinks and soup and crackers in a Brown bag." Brother Houston leaves to cherish his memories, his loving, devoted and dedicated wife of 43 years, Patricia "VeeVee". Deacon Houston's memories will live continue to live on in his children, Sylvester Jr., Kevin DeWayne, Patrick (Jessica), Sylvanna, Kentrel, Sharondalynn; two godchildren, Quincy and Tray and nine grandchildren.
