Mr. Darrell Jerome Thompson

On August 31, 1961, Leonard and Joe Ann Thompson became the proud parents of their first son whom, they named Darrell Jerome. This bouncing baby boy grew up to become a man of faith and integrity. He had a winning smile that endeared many near and far. A life-long member of Sweet Rest Church (SRC), Darrell accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior, and he, then, began his lifetime journey of service to Him. He served in several areas of the church the male choir, Sunday School teaching staff, Usher Board, Brotherhood Ministry, Trustee Board, and Sunday School Superintendent, which he dearly loved. Darrell enjoyed serving in the church, and he loved the Lord with all his heart. He was a very busy man. After work, many days he would be outside tinkering under the hood of his antique truck or mowing yards, his, his family's, and, often, his neighbors. He cared about everyone, and whatever he could do to help others, he did it. There was no task that he wouldn't attempt to complete for his church, family, and his many friends. During his earlier life, Darrell was educated in the Pearl School District, where he graduated from Pearl High School. After graduation, he received his Commercial Driver's License and landed employment as a truck driver with U.S. Foods and, later, United Parcel Service. Darrell enjoyed driving 18-wheelers, being on the open road, alone, with only "My God" to share the cabin with him. After over forty years of driving, Darrell retired from UPS due to health reasons. Although his working career ended, his work on the "battlefield for the Lord" increased significantly. Darrell never got tired of talking about the goodness of the Lord. He shared his testimonies often, to anyone who would listen. On February 23, 1990, Darrell married the love of his life, Glenda Silas Thompson, and they were blessed with three wonderful children: Cedric, Catherine and Courtney. They were married for thirty-three years. Much of their life together was spent in Jackson, but the time came when they moved back to Pearl and built a home next to his mother. He spent many days and nights caring for her until her death in September 2022. Darrell was a very special man. To his family, he was "the man," the person they could count on at all times. Their big brother enjoyed traveling, grilling, and just hanging out in the yard with family and friends. And, he looked forward to mentoring sessions with the boys at Camp Pioneer. Now, Darrell is at rest with his God, who has called him to his heavenly home. He leaves to cherish his memory, three children: Cedric Thompson (Markka), Catherine Mayers, and Courtney Thompson; one sister, Angela Thompson (Ray); and a brother, Roderick Thompson (Kathy); a special nephew, Rashad Thompson; ten (10) grand-children and other nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
