Mr. Ernest Floyd Thompson

Early Life Ernest Floyd Thompson was born on January 14, 1956, in Florence, Mississippi, to the late Erastus and Ruby Thompson, Sr. From an early age, Ernest displayed a joyful and outgoing spirit that would characterize his entire life. He grew up surrounded by love, faith, and a strong sense of family values that he carried with him throughout his journey. Education Ernest attended Florence High School, where he developed lifelong friendships and a reputation for his easy smile and kind heart. He graduated with the Class of 1974, proud of his roots and always fond of his hometown. Career and Service After high school, Ernest began working for Illinois Central Railroad as a brakeman. He took pride in his work and enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow workers. Though his time with the railroad ended following an on-the-job injury, Ernest's resilient and compassionate nature led him to a new purpose. He made it his mission to help others, often lending a hand to those in need without hesitation. Whether repairing a neighbor's roof, fixing plumbing for seniors, or offering encouraging words to a friend, Ernest embodied the true meaning of service and generosity. Faith and Church Involvement Ernest accepted Christ at an early age and was a lifelong member of Greater Enoch Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he faithfully served and sang joyfully with the Male Choir, one of his greatest passions. Later in life, he joined Divine Faith Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of his brother, Dr. Sam Thompson. His faith was steady and sincere, reflected not only in his church involvement but in the way he treated others with patience, humility, and love. Family and Personal Life Ernest was a man who loved deeply and lived fully. He had a gift for making people feel seen, heard, and valued. Known for his jovial personality and infectious laugh, he never met a stranger and could brighten any room he entered. Ernest enjoyed talking with people, sharing stories, and making those around him feel welcome. His nieces and nephews especially adored him for his humor, playful spirit, and unwavering support. Family gatherings were never complete without his laughter and light-hearted jokes. Legacy Ernest's life was a testament to kindness, resilience, and faith. He lived with purpose, giving freely of himself and expecting nothing in return. His generous heart and joyful demeanor touched everyone he encountered. Those who knew him best will remember his helpful hands, his compassionate heart, and his ability to find joy even in life's challenges. Cherished Memories He leaves to cherish his memory: his son, Randall Thompson; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Also mourning his loss are his loving siblings-sister, Youland Thompson of Florence, Mississippi; brother, Erastus Thompson, Jr. of Florence, Mississippi; brother, Dr. Sam Thompson (Dr. Gwendolyn) of Jackson, Mississippi; and sister, Reverend Mary Cooley of Kansas City, Missouri; along with a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara "Doll" Thompson, and his brother, Reverend Henry Christopher Thompson, Sr. Ernest's life was one well lived-rooted in faith, rich in love, and full of laughter. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
