Mrs. Gladys Louise Burton-Macklin

Gladys Louise Burton Macklin was born on March 25, 1935 in Brandon, Mississippi to the late Robert, Sr. and Maggie Hoard Burton. She was the fifth of ten children born to this union. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Leroy Macklin, Sr.; three (3) brothers, Robert Burton, Jr., James Charles "JC" Burton and David James "DJ" (Josie) Burton; six (6) sisters, Mary Jean (Will) Walton, Annie Mae (Reverend David) Reed, Annie Ruth (John) Madison, Maggie Washington, Luberta (JW) Kersh and Lula (Elbert) Watts and one (1) son-in-law, Ronald Stancle, Sr. Gladys' sunset was at her home in Jackson, Mississippi surrounded by loved ones on August 26, 2022. She grew up in Brandon, Mississippi where she attended Pilgrim Rest School and later transitioned to Rankin County School System. She confessed Christ at an early age while attending Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church in Rankin County, Mississippi. She was employed by the town of Brandon, Mississippi until she met her lovely companion, Leroy Macklin, Sr. On June 9, 1956, the couple united in Holy matrimony. This union was blessed with five (5) children, three daughters and two sons. Gladys and Leroy later renewed their vows and celebrated their 50th year anniversary on June 9, 2006 at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. In earlier years Gladys was employed by Tyson Farms Chicken Plant of Jackson, Mississippi until she and Leroy moved to Chicago, Illinois. While in Chicago, Gladys kept the Lord before her and made certain that they collectively attended church regularly. They family were faithful members of New Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church. As a result of Gladys' father becoming ill, the couple relocated back to Mississippi and they were tasked with providing Mr. Burton with care. Gladys' career shifted and she became a bus driver for Jackson Public Schools at Transportation South. She retired with thirty-three (33) years of service and managed to keep a clean and flawless driving record. She was awarded a certificate of high honors for a job well done by her supervisor. She enjoyed fishing, traveling, going to the movies and shopping for nice dresses with matching hats. Mother Gladys was a beautiful woman inside and out and people were drawn to her kind, yet strong, compassionate disposition. She had a unique way of bringing family together with her great southern home cooking providing food for the body and soul. Gladys was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, a faithful friend to many with an uncompromising love of Christ displayed by her willingness to serve God first. Gladys remained faithful to the ministry at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church in Brandon, Mississippi under the leadership of Dr. Ava S. Harvey, Sr. There she was actively serving the Mother Board, member of the women's organization, Women On A Mission (WOAM) and Deaconess Ministry leader. Too, she led the Prison Ministry along with Sister Lashanda Walker Taylor and Sister Twanda Walker Green provided food for the prison ministry. Mother Macklin was also provided leadership to the Deaconess ministry at Pilgrim Rest. As a result of her and her late husband's devotion and untiring faithfulness to Pilgrim Rest Church, a Sunday School room was dedicated in their honor, The Macklin Room. Mother Gladys Macklin left a rich legacy for many to follow. She leaves to cherish her memories: three (3) daughters, Dianne Macklin Stancle, Shirley (Abe) Wallace and Glenda (Chris) Deans; two (2). sons, Leroy (Shonna) Macklin and John Randy (Georgette) Macklin; twenty (20) grandchildren, forty-three (43) great-grandchildren, two (2) great-great grandchildren; one (1) brother-in-law, Isaiah Washington and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
